About Us

I like working with my hands, and I treasure the tools that help me do it well. For nearly four decades as a physical therapist, my joy in finding "the right tool for the task" natually extended to finding the right tools for my patients as well. Thus began my interest in occupational health and ergonomics.

I founded Health By Design in 1998 for the purpose of manufacturing the Bambach Saddle Seat. The innovative seat was developed nearly 17 years earlier by an occupational therapist Mary Gale in Australia. Saddle sitting was relatively unknown in North America at the time. I knew saddle sitting was a critically important "tool" for good health, particularly for people who worked with their hands, for those with painful conditions of the neck, back, shoulders and hip, and for the disabled. Conventional seating manufacturers were reluctant to invest in an unknown concept. I took on North American manufacturing and distribution with enthusiasm.

Other products followed, and so my little business has grown. Many of our products were developed by clinical colleagues who found solutions to patient needs with their novel product inventions. Now and again I still answer phones and emails, and I still enjoy helping out on the shop floor when I can.
